History

World Inclusion Day started in 2020 with a simple but powerful idea. The Garden Foundation, a nonprofit based in Las Vegas, launched it to shine a light on people with disabilities and differences.

Taylor Gardner Chaney led the charge, inspired by her sister Lindsay, who has Down syndrome. She saw how often people feel left out—not just at school or work, but everywhere. That realization sparked a plan to change things, starting with one special day.

The goal was never about making noise for just one group. Instead, it aimed to bring everyone together, no matter their background, identity, or ability. The first celebration was small but heartfelt.

Families and friends gathered to talk, share, and listen. They highlighted the value of kindness, respect, and real connection.

Since then, the idea has grown. More cities, schools, and businesses now take part. They host events, share stories, and take time to include those who often get overlooked. The message is clear: when people feel welcome, everyone wins.

Inclusion isn’t just a theme—it’s a way to live. This day gives us a moment to look around, reach out, and create spaces where everyone feels they belong. That’s what makes it matter.

How to celebrate

Share Personal Stories

Encourage individuals to share experiences that highlight the importance of inclusion. This can be done through short talks, written pieces, or videos. Sharing personal narratives fosters understanding and empathy among diverse groups.

Host a Cultural Potluck

Organize a gathering where participants bring dishes representing their cultural backgrounds. This not only introduces new flavors but also opens up conversations about traditions and heritage. Food has a unique way of connecting people.

Create an Inclusion Wall

Set up a space where individuals can post messages, drawings, or photos that represent what inclusion means to them. This visual display can serve as a powerful reminder of the community’s commitment to embracing diversity.

Facilitate Inclusive Games

Plan activities that require teamwork and highlight the strengths of each participant. Games that emphasize collaboration over competition can help break down barriers and build trust.

Support Local Artisans

Invite local artists from diverse backgrounds to showcase their work. This not only supports the local economy but also provides a platform for underrepresented voices to be heard and appreciated.
