History

The first online product reviews began to make an appearance on a few websites, such as eBay, in 1999. Soon after, in 2000, Tripadvisor made its debut as the original ‘social travel site’ – and since then it has become the largest in the world. The concept started out simply: travelers left reviews about hotels, and other potential travelers read them to help in making decisions.

Since then, other travel and restaurant review sites have developed, including Google and Yelp. Other opportunities for leaving reviews come from sites the person has verified bookings with, like Booking.com or OpenTable.

Founded in 2022 by Tripadvisor, Write a Review Day exists not only to help people make better travel and dining choices, but primarily to provide the tourism, hospitality and other industries with some much-needed good vibes. Sadly, after the tourism industry alone lost more than $900 billion in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 350,000 businesses worldwide closed between March 2020 and January 2022.

Helping local diners, product buyers and world travelers to make better decisions means that businesses can thrive as they provide the meals, stays, merchandise and activities that people want and deserve. Write a Review Day encourages people to write reviews that offer guidance to other travelers as they begin to take to the roads, seas and skies again. And that’s great news for everyone!

How to celebrate

Learn How to Write a Good Review

Never written a review before? That’s okay! It’s easy. Just make sure to provide practical information. Be specific about the time visited, if there was a long wait, customer service ratings, cleanliness, menu offerings or extra perks, pricing and other pertinent information. While stars are aggregated to an overall score or rating, according to Tripadvisor, readers tend to prefer long-form reviews (with specific content written out) over short ones. So feel free to share those personal insights that will be most descriptive, objective and useful.

Write a Review

Whether it means commenting on the spectacular bolognese sauce at the Italian eatery down the street or mentioning that hotel room with the extremely loud air conditioner, this is the day to be honest and share. Writing a review is a great way to launch the beginning of the summer travel season in the Northern Hemisphere! That way, others who are also making their summer travel plans can have the benefit of others’ personal experiences.

Where to Write a Review

Communities of people leaving reviews and sharing feedback is a global phenomenon, and there are sites for specific and generic audiences alike. Try out some of these platforms for writing reviews: Tripadvisor Of course, the most obvious site to write a review on would be Tripadvisor. After all, they did found the day, and they are the original and largest travel review website on the planet. Tripadvisor has been connecting travelers and diners with the information they need for more than 20 years and has reached the milestone of more than 1 billion opinions and reviews. Alternatives There are plenty of other alternatives for both specific and generic audiences. OpenTable, which started out as a reservation system, is now a trusted source for restaurant reviews. And for reviewing businesses, including hotels, shops, restaurants, and service providers, Google, Yelp, and Trustpilot are all reputable options.

Read Some Helpful Reviews

Marketing and advertising can only get businesses so far, as most people tend to trust unbiased reviews more. In fact, according to Tripadvisor, 3 out of 4 people think online reviews are very important when making travel decisions. Pop over to Tripadvisor, OpenTable, Google or another review site and find out what others have to say. It is important to know that people who have bad experiences may be 2-3 times as likely to post critical reviews, so keep those statistics in mind when balancing out what people have to say in their reviews. Certainly, all reviews should be considered but remember that one fault-finding review, with ten other stellar reviews, might just be a bad apple.

Share Write a Review Day on Social Media
