History

Founded in 2002 by author Dr. Gayle Carson, Spunky Old Broads Day is here to remind everyone that life certainly doesn’t end just because a woman turns 50 years old! In a world where youth is often worshiped and cherished, Spunky Old Broads Day is a time to pay respect and honor to those women who have just come into their prime and success after they’ve lived for five decades.

And the best thing about Spunky Old Broads Day? It doesn’t have to end with just one day! This is the first day that launches a whole month full of fun and delightful celebration because it’s the kickoff to Spunky Old Broads Month that is celebrated all February long.

How to celebrate

Compliment a Spunky Old Broad

Whether it’s simply telling a sassy looking older woman that you like her hat or telling your grandma how much you respect her story and what she has been through, Spunky Old Broads Day is about keeping an eye out for women who have lived a little more life. Stumble upon them accidentally, or seek them out intentionally, on this day to say how much they are appreciated and what great role models they are for the younger generation. Perhaps offer to take an older woman friend out for coffee and then simply listen, soaking up her wisdom for life.

Watch Some Spunky Old Broads

One great way to celebrate Spunky Old Broads Day might be to watch some shows that feature delightfully aging women. Some fun entertainment for the day might be one of these shows that boast some feisty, mature women: Golden Girls. The original classic, this American sitcom tells the story of four women who room together in their golden yearsGracie and Frankie. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as two older women whose husbands have left them for each otherCall the Midwife.
