History

Shivaji Maharaj, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji, was a Maratha warrior king and the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India in the 17th century. He was born on February 19, 1630, and his birth anniversary is celebrated as Shivaji Jayanti.

Shivaji’s rule was marked by his military campaigns against the Mughal Empire, the Adilshahi, and the Portuguese. He established a strong and efficient administration, and his reign is considered a golden age in Maratha history. He was a visionary leader who introduced several innovative policies and reforms, including the creation of a powerful navy.

Shivaji Jayanti was first celebrated in 1870 by the British colonial government in the Bombay Presidency as a way to recognize Shivaji’s contributions to the region’s history. Since then, the festival has become a major cultural event and is celebrated across Maharashtra.

The celebration includes parades, cultural programs, and the hoisting of the Maratha flag. It is an opportunity to pay homage to Shivaji and to remember his legacy of valor, bravery, and leadership.
