Shine a Light Night began in 2012. Focus Ireland, a group that works to end homelessness, started the event. Sister Stanislaus Kennedy founded the charity in 1985. That first year, 55 business leaders spent a night outside.
They raised more than €350,000 to support people at risk of losing their homes. This bold move drew public attention and helped others understand what so many go through.
After that, the event quickly grew. People from all over Ireland joined—workers, students, and families. Each year, they sleep outside for one night. This act raises money and helps others learn more about the issue.
It also encourages conversations that often stay hidden. Companies now host team sleep-outs, while schools run their own events. Communities rally together, sharing food, stories, and support.
Over time, the event has raised millions. The funds help provide housing, support services, and prevention programs. These services aim to stop homelessness before it starts.
Shine a Light Night reminds people that no one should have to sleep without a roof. It turns one night into action, helping real lives.
Each year brings more voices, more support, and a stronger push for lasting change. Focus Ireland continues to lead this movement with growing national impact.
