Secondhand Sunday

Gone are the days when used or secondhand clothing or household goods came with a negative connotation. In today’s world, which values sustainable practices of reusing, shopping for pre-owned items is an amazing way to make sure every item gets a long life.

History

The inaugural celebration of Secondhand Sunday took place in 2022 when it was founded by Poshmark, the online platform for buying and selling gently used clothing, shoes, accessories and other items.

The event encourages people to save money and do the earth a favor by buying perfectly good used items that are ideal for spicing up wardrobes, decorating homes, and so much more!

How to celebrate

Shop Second Hand

In honor of Secondhand Sunday, head on over to a vintage shop, thrift store, antique shop or another favorite place where repurposed or reused items are sold. As an added bonus, many secondhand shops are independent, locally owned businesses, so this is a perfect time to show them some support too. This might be a time to pick up a one-of-a-kind gift for someone on that Christmas shopping list, or a new outfit with sparkles and bling to wear to that holiday party!

Get Crafty with Secondhand

There’s something about an original, one-of-a-kind gift that speaks to the heart! Secondhand shopping is a perfect opportunity to turn found objects into an amazing gift for someone special. Grab a glue gun, needle and thread, other crafty tools to turn a plain or boring thrifted item into a gem of a present!

Learn Tips for Secondhand Shopping

Those who are new into the world of secondhand shopping might be overwhelmed at the idea. Never fear! Check out a few tips and tricks that can help with just such an endeavor: Always Measure. Remember that sizes on secondhand items might not be accurate so be sure to try on for yourself or take measurements if the item is for a gift. Look Everywhere. While some secondhand shops are well-organized, items can have a tendency to wander around. So even when looking for women’s clothing, wander through the children’s or men’s section, just in case. Slow Down. Vintage shopping isn’t a quick errand – it’s more of a hunting and gathering adventure! Schedule the whole afternoon on Secondhand Sunday to wander through shops and see what jumps out.

Shop Secondhand Online

As this day was started by an online secondhand marketplace, for some people shopping online might be a good way to spend Secondhand Sunday. Ebay, Poshmark, ThredUp, Oxfam and even Goodwill have an online presence for those who would rather avoid the in-person hunt.
