History

The Rainforest World Music Festival began in November 1997, thanks to the combined efforts of Randy Raine-Reusch and Robert Basuik.

Randy, a renowned musician, and Robert, a marketing head from the Sarawak Tourism Board, were inspired by Canadian music festivals. They envisioned a global music event set in the lush surroundings of Sarawak, Malaysia. With help from two local brothers, Edric and Edgar Ong, they brought this idea to life.

The first festival, held at the Sarawak Cultural Village, featured 1,500 attendees. It was a small but successful start, showcasing indigenous music from around the world. By the second year, the festival had gained more support and volunteers, establishing itself as a unique event in the region. By the third year, the festival had grown significantly, drawing more musicians and attendees.

Over the years, the festival expanded, featuring a diverse lineup of musicians from various countries. It became a melting pot of cultures, celebrating both traditional and contemporary music. The event now draws tens of thousands of visitors each year, making it one of Southeast Asia’s most anticipated music festivals.

The Sarawak Cultural Village, nestled at the foot of Mount Santubong, provides a stunning backdrop. The festival includes interactive workshops, lively performances, and cultural exhibitions. It’s a vibrant celebration that connects people from all walks of life through music, culture, and nature.

Today, the Rainforest World Music Festival is globally recognized and has won numerous awards. It continues to promote cultural exchange and environmental awareness, making it a truly unique event that resonates with the spirit of the rainforest.

How to celebrate

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching

Kick off your festival experience by joining one of the interactive dance workshops. These sessions are led by musicians from around the world, sharing their traditional dance moves with everyone. You’ll find yourself swaying to the beats of African drums or learning indigenous dance steps. It’s a perfect way to loosen up and feel the spirit of the festival!

Jam Along with the Masters

Don’t miss the chance to participate in the music workshops. Grab an instrument, join a jam session, and let your inner musician shine. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned player, there’s something for everyone. Try your hand at a djembe drum, or learn to play a bamboo flute. You might even end up improvising with the pros!

Savor the Flavors of Sarawak

Exploring the food stalls is a must. With a wide array of local and international cuisines, your taste buds are in for a treat. Sample the famous Sarawak laksa or try some unique Bornean delicacies. Don’t forget to grab a refreshing coconut drink to keep cool under the tropical sun. Eating your way through the festival is as satisfying as the music itself!

Camp Under the Canopy

For a more immersive experience, consider camping at the Sarawak Cultural Village. Sleep under the rainforest canopy, listen to the sounds of nature, and wake up right in the heart of the action. Bring your own tent or rent one at the venue. It’s an adventure within an adventure, perfect for those who want to stay close to the music and nature.

Groove to the Night Beats

As the sun sets, get ready for the main event—musical performances under the stars. From traditional tunes to modern beats, the lineup will have you grooving all night. Bring a mat or a small chair if you want to sit back and relax, or get up and dance the night away. The magic of the rainforest combined with live music creates an enchanting atmosphere you won’t forget.
