History

National Non-GMO Month began as an initiative to promote awareness about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food supply.

This annual event started in 2010 and is spearheaded by the Non-GMO Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the availability of non-GMO choices.

The organization was initially founded by two grocery stores: The Natural Grocery Company in California and The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto.

The month-long celebration highlights the importance of transparency in our food system. It encourages consumers to make informed choices and supports farmers who produce non-GMO crops.

By raising awareness, National Non-GMO Month aims to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable farming practices. The Non-GMO Project provides rigorous verification to ensure that products meet non-GMO standards, giving shoppers confidence in their purchases.

Today, National Non-GMO Month has grown significantly. Thousands of retailers participate, offering promotions and educational events to help spread the word about the benefits of non-GMO products.

This movement has contributed to a more informed public and a greater availability of non-GMO options in the marketplace, reflecting a growing demand for transparency and healthier food choices.
