History

National Butter Day began in 2021. Dinner Bell Creamery, part of Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI), created it.

They noticed butter lacked its own holiday. To fix that, they established this day to honor butter and those who make it. They chose November 17, aligning with the start of the holiday baking season.

The celebration gained unexpected attention. In 2021, the K-pop group BTS released their song “Butter.” Later that year, they appeared on The Tonight Show, where the host mentioned National Butter Day. This coincidence boosted the day’s popularity.

Since then, National Butter Day has grown in recognition. It celebrates butter’s role in cooking and baking.

The day also highlights the efforts of dairy farmers and producers. People across the country now participate in various butter-related activities.

The holiday serves as a reminder of butter’s significance in our daily lives. From enhancing recipes to supporting local economies, butter plays a vital role. National Butter Day encourages appreciation for this versatile ingredient.

How to celebrate

Churn Your Own Butter

Experience the joy of making butter at home. Pour heavy cream into a jar, secure the lid, and shake vigorously until butter forms. Rinse the butter under cold water to remove excess buttermilk, then add a pinch of salt if desired. This hands-on activity is both fun and educational, suitable for all ages.

Bake with Butter

Elevate your baking by incorporating butter into your favorite recipes. Try making classic butter cookies, rich pound cakes, or flaky croissants. The distinct flavor and texture that butter imparts can transform ordinary baked goods into extraordinary treats.

Explore Compound Butters

Create flavored butters by blending softened butter with herbs, spices, or sweet additions. Consider combinations like garlic and parsley, honey and cinnamon, or lemon zest and dill. These compound butters can enhance the taste of breads, vegetables, and meats.

Host a Butter Tasting

Organize a tasting session featuring various types of butter. Include options like salted, unsalted, cultured, and European-style butter. Pair them with fresh bread or crackers to appreciate the subtle differences in flavor and texture.

Share the Butter Love

Spread joy by gifting homemade butter or butter-based treats to friends and family. Package them in decorative containers with personalized notes. This thoughtful gesture can brighten someone’s day and foster a sense of community.
