History

International Cephalopod Awareness Days began in 2007. A small group of science fans on the TONMO forum (The Octopus News Magazine Online) wanted to celebrate octopuses and their relatives.

They chose October 8 because most octopuses have eight arms. That date also matched nicely with squid and cuttlefish, which have ten limbs, making October—the tenth month—a perfect fit. At first, it was just one day, but the idea quickly caught on. Soon, it became a five-day event.

Each day now highlights something special. One day focuses on octopuses, another on squid and cuttlefish. There’s a day for the nautilus, a rare shelled cephalopod.

Another celebrates myths and sea monsters, while the last one looks back at ancient fossils. The week grew through word of mouth and online sharing. Scientists, educators, and aquariums began joining in.

Now, people use the days to explore the clever, colorful lives of cephalopods. These events bring attention to how smart and unusual these animals really are. They also support better understanding of their place in the ocean.

What started as a fun idea has grown into a meaningful tradition. It invites everyone to learn something new about these wild, strange sea creatures.

How to celebrate

Aquarium Visit

Take a trip to a local aquarium with cephalopod exhibits. Observe octopus, squid, or cuttlefish close‑up. Ask guides questions. Learning happens naturally.

Watch an Ocean Film

Host a short film night featuring documentaries about squid, cuttlefish or octopus. Choose titles like Colossal Squid or Kings of Camouflage. Enrich your understanding of these animals.

Share Cephalopod Facts Online

Post interesting tidbits on social media. Highlight speed, camouflage skills, brain power, or unique anatomy. Use tags like #CephalopodAwareness. It spreads interest widely.

Support Ocean Protection

Donate to marine conservation groups. Focus on smarter fishing practices and clean seas. Protect cephalopod habitats affected by pollution and overfishing.

Create Cephalopod Art or Crafts

Draw or paint these creatures. Make paper models or tentacle-themed decorations. Invite friends or kids to join. Creativity meets marine science in a fun way.

Host a Trivia or Story Night

Invite friends to share myths or tales about legendary cephalopods like krakens. Mix quiz questions about real cephalopods and fiction. Spark conversation and learning.
