History

Annoy Squidward Day comes from the Employee of the Month episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, which was first shown as part of the first season of the show.

The series, which is actually the highest-rated to air on Nickelodeon, first aired in 1999, so the origins of Annoy Squidward Day can be traced back to somewhere around that year.

Since the show was aired at the Kids’ Choice Awards in 1999, it has gone from strength to strength. In fact, there are even a few feature-length Spongebob movies out there that have played in theaters, including Sponge on the Run and Sponge out of Water.

A surprise to some, the show has won a number of awards as well, including BAFTA Children’s Awards, Kids’ Choice Awards, Emmy Awards, Annie Awards, and Golden Reel Awards.

Since the show is so popular, it’s no surprise that fans of SpongeBob and his crew have come to enjoy Annoy Squidward Day, just for the fun of it!

How to celebrate

Dress Up as SpongeBob

Costumes are perfect a day like this! Whether dressing up as SpongeBob, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Patrick or Sandy, donning an outfit of a character from Bikini Bottom is a perfect way to bring the show to life.

Make a Krusty Krab Meal

As the cashier at the Krusty Krab restaurant, Squidward is fairly apathetic about his employment. While the best course of action might be to annoy Squidward by eating at his restaurant, it can be a little hard to get to. For folks who don’t have a Krusty Krab franchise in their town, it’s possible to cook fun meals that represent the food found in Bikini Bottom. Just a quick internet search reveals plenty of inspired recipes including: Krabby Patties (containing crab meat, mustard, eggs, dipping sauce) Barnacle Chips (potato chips, although apparently not very tasty)Krusty Krab Pizza (made from crabby patties with pepperoni on top)Popcorn (SpongeBob’s favorite food) Enjoy these tasty treats alone or, even better, invite a few friends over to share in the fun!

Engage in SpongeBob Activities

Just a little wander down the children’s section of a department store (or an online search) will reveal plenty of games, toys and activities related to the Spongebob Squarepants characters. Coloring books, puzzles and various toys are all part of the fun that might be especially enjoyed by a child (or a child-like adult who is a fan of the show!).

Watch SpongeBob SquarePants

Of course, the best place to celebrate this special day is by watching the Employee of the Month episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. That way, you will be able to learn more about the origins of this date and you can gain some inspiration for how to celebrate the day too, especially if you know your very own Squidward who you can annoy! And for those who have seen this episode several times and are tired of watching it, plenty of other SpongeBob episodes (more than 200, in fact!) are available to watch in celebration of Annoy Squidward Day. Plus, the success of the show has led to additional series being created that are based on other characters, with The Patrick Star Show currently in development. There is also a spin-off series that is based on the character Squidward Tentacles, which would be an ideal thing to watch on Annoy Squidward Day.

Act Annoying!

Probably one of the best ways to give a nod to Annoy Squidward Day is to act annoying to the people nearby. This may not be especially productive at work, of course, but with friends and family it could be a fun pastime–especially for those who are also fans of the Spongebob Squarepants show. Whether poking someone until they’re irritating, making strange noises, whistling or singing badly, annoying others keeps with the spirit of the day. Those who want to tell annoying jokes might find that a Spongebob Squarepants joke book will do the trick!
