The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow began in 1983. Derek Mathews, a former University of Albuquerque Dean of Students, started the event. Initially held at the University of Albuquerque, it quickly outgrew this venue due to its popularity.
By 1984, it had moved to the New Mexico Fairgrounds. The event saw further growth, eventually relocating to “The Pit” at the University of New Mexico, where it stayed for 30 years. In 2017, it found a new home at the Tingley Coliseum on the New Mexico State Fairgrounds.
Today, the Gathering of Nations is the largest Pow Wow in North America, drawing participants from over 500 tribes in the United States and Canada. It features dance and music competitions, the Miss Indian World pageant, and a vibrant Indian Traders Market.
This annual event celebrates Native American culture, bringing together thousands to honor traditions through dance, music, and community activities.
