History

American Sparkling Wine Day began with a simple but bold idea. Davon D. E. Hatchett, a wine writer and bubbly lover, noticed that no official day existed to honor sparkling wines made in the United States.

She wanted to change that. As someone deeply involved in the wine world, she felt American winemakers deserved more attention for their sparkling creations.

She launched the holiday to give those wines a real moment. July 3rd was her chosen date. It sat perfectly before the Fourth of July, offering a natural time to celebrate with fizz. That timing helped people connect sparkling wine with joy, freedom, and American craft.

The first mentions of the holiday started appearing online in the late 2010s. Since then, more wineries, shops, and wine fans have joined in.

Each year, new events and tastings help spread the word. Hatchett’s idea turned into a national toast, giving homegrown bubbles the spotlight they long deserved.

How to celebrate

Host a bubbly tasting night

Pick several U.S. sparkling wines from different regions. Include dry and sweeter styles. Sip slowly and compare what stands out. Napa and the Finger Lakes offer a great variety.

Build a mimosa‑style bar

Offer juice options like orange, cranberry or peach. Guests can mix their own fizzy drinks. Keep bottles chilled and labels easy to read. Edible fruit and herbs add a vibrant visual.

Pair drinks with small bites

Serve cheese, salty snacks, or simple charcuterie. Popcorn works surprisingly well and stays on theme. Pairings highlight the wine’s bubbles and flavor.

Try a sparkling cocktail twist

Make a Champagne cocktail with bitters and sugar, or go for a spritz with elderflower or Aperol. Bellinis or berry sangrias bring bright flair.

Open in style (and safely)

Try sabrage with a blunt-edge tool if you want drama—but only if you feel confident and follow safety tips. A classic pop from chilled bottles works perfectly too.
