AAPI Women’s Equal Pay Day

AAPI Women's Equal Pay Day is an important day that sheds light on the wage disparities faced by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women. On this day, we highlight that these women, on average, earn only 80 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.

History

This day symbolizes how far into the current year, AAPI women must work to match the previous year’s earnings of white men. Created in 1996 to spotlight these economic disparities, the observance emphasizes the ongoing fight for equal pay and economic justice.

The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) and other advocacy groups initiated AAPI Women’s Equal Pay Day.

These organizations aim to address the distinct economic challenges faced by AAPI women. Despite progress, significant wage gaps remain, particularly for certain ethnic groups like Burmese and Bangladeshi women, who earn significantly less than their white male counterparts.
