History

World Usability Day began in 2005 as a global event focused on making technology easier for everyone to use.

It was started by the Usability Professionals Association, now known as the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA).

The idea came from a conversation between two UXPA board members, Elizabeth Rosenzweig and Nigel Bevan, in 2004. They wanted to create a day that would bring attention to the importance of designing products and services that are user-friendly.

Since its inception, World Usability Day has been observed annually on the second Thursday of November.

Each year, it focuses on a different theme related to usability and user experience, such as healthcare, education, or sustainability.

The event has grown significantly over the years, with participation from professionals, organizations, and communities worldwide. It serves as a platform to share knowledge, conduct workshops, and promote the principles of user-centered design.

World Usability Day continues to inspire efforts to make technology more accessible and efficient for all users.

It emphasizes the importance of considering the user’s perspective in the design process to create better experiences.

How to celebrate

Explore Everyday Interactions

Take note of daily interactions with digital tools. Consider what works well and what could be improved. Reflecting on these experiences can highlight the importance of user-friendly design.

Share Personal Experiences

Discuss with friends or colleagues about tools or apps that are particularly easy or difficult to use. Sharing stories can raise awareness about the significance of usability in design.

Attend Local Events

Look for workshops or talks in your area focusing on user experience and design. Participating in these events can provide insights into creating more accessible and efficient products.

Provide Constructive Feedback

When using websites or applications, take the time to offer feedback on your experience. Constructive comments can guide designers in making improvements that benefit all users.

Support Inclusive Design

Advocate for products and services that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity. Encouraging inclusive design practices ensures that tools are usable by a diverse range of people.
