History

In 2010, the Nature Forever Society of India, led by Mohammed Dilawar, launched an initiative to highlight the alarming decline in house sparrow populations.

Collaborating with France’s Eco-Sys Action Foundation, they established a day dedicated to sparrow conservation. This effort quickly gained international attention, uniting individuals and organizations worldwide in a shared mission.

The inaugural celebration featured art competitions, awareness campaigns, and media interactions, all aimed at educating the public about sparrow preservation.

Since then, this day has evolved into a global platform, fostering collaboration among conservationists and encouraging communities to create bird-friendly environments.

Through these collective actions, the initiative continues to promote the protection of sparrows and the broader urban biodiversity they represent.

How to celebrate

Set Up Bird Feeders

Install feeders stocked with grains and seeds in your garden or balcony. This provides sparrows with a reliable food source, especially in urban areas where natural options are scarce.

Provide Fresh Water

Place shallow water dishes in shaded spots to offer sparrows a place to drink and bathe. Regularly replenishing the water ensures cleanliness and attracts these birds to your space.

Create Nesting Spaces

Install small nesting boxes in your garden or on balconies to offer safe places for sparrows to raise their young. Positioning them away from predators increases their effectiveness.

Plant Native Vegetation

Incorporate native plants, shrubs, and trees into your garden to provide natural habitats and food sources for sparrows. Avoiding pesticides helps maintain a healthy environment for these birds.

Support Conservation Organizations

Donate to or volunteer with groups dedicated to bird conservation. Your support helps fund initiatives aimed at protecting sparrows and their habitats.
