History

Softball was not invented, as many suspect, to create an easier version of Baseball intended for youth and women to play, but instead was created so that the great sport of baseball could be brought indoors and enjoyed all year round.

This misconception, combined with the idea that the game is in any way easier and less competitive than its hardball cousin is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the game. Yes, the ball used in softball used to BE soft, hence the name, but there’s far more to it than that.

Due to the nature of the game, the runner has less time to get to first base, or in fact to any of the plates, due to the overall diamond and field being far smaller.

Additionally, there is less time for the ball to GET to first base for much the same reason, so the difficulty level for both the runner and the opposing team are both increased, and that’s just one way everything is ramped up when you reduce the field.

Softball comes in three variations, and if you’re interested, we encourage you to look into them and learn more about this great game.

We have seen World Softball Day celebrated across many different cultures and countries over the years. It has become one of the most adaptable and culturally diverse sports, as well as being vital in terms of providing youth and women with opportunities and pathways to participate in sport.

In fact, World Softball Day often generates a considerable amount of global attention, with events and activities taking place in many different countries.

This includes places across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East whereby the non-contact nature and flexible dress code of softball make the sport appealing to Muslim women and girls, as well as people from other diverse backgrounds.

How to celebrate

Start Up a Game

World Softball Day is a great chance to get out into the world and participate in a sport many of us haven’t played since we were kids. For many of us, it will be the only time this year that we get outside and play a game with our friends. Whether you’re doing it for bonding, nostalgia, or to find out what it’s all about, get out and play a game of softball on World Softball Day.

Learn More About Softball

Of course, you don’t have to go to the effort of organizing a game yourself. It is advisable to do a bit of research online to find out whether or not there are any softball events that are going on in your local area. Learning more about this great game is a perfect way to start, followed up by getting a group of friends together for a game!

Attend a World Softball Day Game

As mentioned, this is an event that is widely celebrated across the world, and so there is a high chance that there is going to be something going on near you. There are plenty of calendars and event resources online, and you can also check out event pages on Facebook to see if anyone is organizing anything that’s easy for you to get to.

Support the Cause

You can also use World Softball Day as the perfect opportunity to fundraise for grassroots sports too. Grassroots is simply the most basic level of sports in your region. Fundraising is critical to help future sports stars. Even the smallest of donations can pave the way for the stars of tomorrow. You never know; your softball event could end up resulting in making donations that contribute to the next big superstar in the sport. Pretty cool, right? You don’t need to think of anything complex in order to successfully fundraise for softball. All you need is to get a game going and you can charge people to participate or an entry fee to watch. You can make it a day filled with other activities as well, whether this is a raffle, cake stall, egg and spoon race, or a combination of all of them! This may sound like a big undertaking, but all you need to do is get a group of people together in the community that are willing to help and things will get rolling pretty quickly.
