History

World Parrot Day began in 2004, launched by the World Parrot Trust. This organization created the event to raise awareness about the struggles parrots face in the wild and captivity.

Many species were declining due to deforestation, illegal trade, and habitat destruction. The goal was to educate the public and inspire action to protect these remarkable birds.

The first celebration took place in London’s Trafalgar Square. Supporters gathered to highlight the threats to parrots and push for stronger protections. Since then, the event has gained worldwide recognition. Conservation groups, zoos, and bird lovers now take part each year, spreading the message through events, social media, and fundraising efforts.

Parrots play an important role in their ecosystems, helping forests grow by spreading seeds. However, many species face extinction due to human activities. World Parrot Day reminds people that action is needed to secure their future.

How to celebrate

Create Parrot-Themed Art

Unleash your creativity by crafting parrot-inspired artwork. Use materials like colorful paper, paints, or clay to design masks, sculptures, or drawings. This activity suits all ages and fosters a deeper connection to these beautiful creatures.

Spend time at nearby aviaries or zoos that house parrots. Observing them firsthand enhances understanding of their behaviors and habitats. Many facilities offer special events or educational programs on this day.

Gather friends and family for a screening of documentaries about parrots. Films like “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” provide insight into their lives and conservation challenges. This shared experience can inspire discussions and awareness.
