History

World Let’s Stop Shouting Day began in the UK in 2021. A group called Let’s Stop Shouting Community Interest Company created it to help people think about how they talk.

They believed raised voices can harm relationships, mental health, and focus. The group wanted to offer a new way—one that supports calm, thoughtful conversation.

Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar, a British counsellor, strongly supported the idea. She believed that voice tone affects how safe and heard people feel. With her help, the message reached more schools, workplaces, and families.

The campaign quickly gained attention. It gave people a reason to reflect on their habits and try something different.

In 2024, the focus widened. The team added education about supporting people who are neurodivergent, especially during meltdowns or shutdowns. These are moments when shouting can hurt more than help. The movement began to talk more about how kindness sounds—not just how it feels.

November 6 became the fixed annual date. More people now join each year. Schools, offices, and homes use the day to reset how they interact.

The message is simple but strong: calm voices build better spaces. This day shows that even small changes in speech can have a big impact.

How to celebrate

Use a Softer Voice

Try speaking one level lower than usual. This small change often encourages others to respond with more thought and ease. Lower tones help build trust in group talks or family chats. It also helps children feel safer and more open.

Take Listening Breaks

Instead of jumping in, wait before answering. Give someone space to finish their thought. This builds a smoother flow in every chat. Even short silences can lower tension. Try nodding or smiling to show you’re tuned in without needing to interrupt.

Create a Quiet Zone

Pick one room or corner at home where loud sounds stay out. Add a note or gentle reminder nearby. Use that space for reading, resting, or simply breathing. Quiet surroundings can reset your mind in the middle of a noisy day.

Encourage Calm at Work

Start the day with a short team reminder to speak with care. Keep meetings clear and brief. If voices rise, gently bring the group back to focus. Suggest one-on-one chats instead of group debates for tricky topics.

Avoid Loud Media

Turn down the volume on devices for one day. Skip shows with lots of shouting or chaos. Choose calm music, a podcast, or something that doesn’t overwhelm the ears. This helps set a peaceful tone at home or work.
