History

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims began in 1993. Brigitte Chaudhry, who founded the UK charity RoadPeace, organized the first event.

She wanted to honor those lost in road crashes and support their families. At that time, no global day existed to remember these victims.

Chaudhry’s efforts aimed to fill that gap and bring attention to the issue. In 2005, the United Nations recognized the importance of this cause.

They officially adopted the day, encouraging countries worldwide to observe it annually. Since then, the day has grown into a global event, uniting people in remembrance and advocacy.

Today, the World Day of Remembrance serves multiple purposes. It honors those who have died or been injured in road traffic incidents. It also acknowledges the work of emergency services and medical professionals who respond to such events.

Moreover, the day raises awareness about the impact of road crashes on families and communities. It encourages governments and individuals to take action to improve road safety.

Through various events and campaigns, the day promotes measures to prevent future tragedies. By remembering the past, it aims to create a safer future for all road users.
