History

In an effort to recognize the continually developing system of international justice, World Day for International Justice was founded. Sometimes referred to as the Day of International Criminal Justice, this date was set on July 17 to coincide with the adoption of the creation of the International Criminal Court. This was accomplished through a treaty referred to as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in 1998.

Since its inception, at least 130 countries have signed the treaty. Up to 80 states have ratified the Rome treaty, representing every geographical region on the globe.

World Day for International Justice is meant to bring a focus and raise awareness about crimes against humanity, gaining justice for victims of war crimes and genocide, fighting against impunity, and seeking fair and just treatment for all.

How to celebrate

Get Educated About International Justice

Taking part in the World Day for International Justice can mean learning and understanding a bit more about how the world works, especially as it relates to criminal justice. A great way to get started is to read about the subject of international criminal justice, whether through books or educational articles online.

Raise Awareness and Promote Justice

Whether using influence on social media or hosting an event that promotes action toward justice, raising awareness for the World Day for International Justice is a worthy cause. Use this time to start an educated conversation with someone at work. Host a speaker or a panel discussion at the local library, school or other public venue.

Volunteer for a Good Cause

Depending on where people live, they can often volunteer their time to help out in various types of charities that promote justice. Of course, people who have law degrees or ties to the legal system can offer to do pro bono work that promotes justice and fairness in their local areas or on a grander scale. Some places for people to consider volunteering in the USA might be the Alliance for Justice, the Social Justice Resource Center or the Environmental Justice Foundation. In the UK, Journey to Justice, Support Through Court, and the Prison Reform Trust are just a few of the myriad of ways that people can donate their time to promote justice in their communities.

Make a Donation to a Justice Charity

Those who are interested in supporting justice charities might choose to make a donation to a worthy charity that fights to help set the world into balance and peace through justice work. Fighting for the cause of international justice can be financially costly, and making even a small donation in support of these charities can help to further the ability to bring justice and peace to the world.
