History

World Animal Reiki Day began in 2015. Animal Reiki teacher Kathleen Prasad started it to honor her first animal teacher, a dog named Dakota.

She created the day to raise awareness about how Reiki can help animals feel better. It also gives people a way to support animals through quiet, respectful presence.

Dakota was a rescued Akita who taught Kathleen how to truly listen. He showed her that animals respond best when we offer calm energy, not control.

His gentle strength became the heart of her work. In his memory, this day was born to inspire others.

Each year, more people learn about animal Reiki because of this event. Shelters, pet owners, and Reiki groups now take part around the world.

They give their time and care to animals in peaceful, healing ways.

The day also helps build trust between animals and people. That trust grows through patience, stillness, and respect. These values stand at the center of animal Reiki.

At its core, the day reminds us that animals aren’t just here to follow us. Sometimes, they lead the way.

How to celebrate

Try a Quiet Reiki Session at Home

Set aside a few calm minutes with your pet. Sit nearby, relax your breathing, and focus gently on peaceful thoughts. Let your animal come closer on their own. Keep movements soft and your attention steady. This quiet space can help animals feel safe and connected.

Visit a Local Shelter

Many rescue centers welcome volunteers to share time with animals. Some allow trained Reiki practitioners to offer sessions. Even without formal skills, your calm presence helps. Animals in transition often benefit from quiet attention and care.

Learn the Basics

Take a beginner-friendly course on Animal Reiki. Online classes or workshops are often simple to follow. Understanding this practice deepens your bond with pets. It also helps you support them in stressful moments. Start small, and keep your approach gentle.

Share a Story

Talk about a moment when an animal helped you feel better. Post it online or mention it in conversation. Personal stories help others understand how animals offer comfort. They may inspire someone else to try Reiki or spend quiet time with their pet.

Support a Reiki Group

Some nonprofit groups offer Reiki to shelter animals. A small donation or social media post can help their efforts grow. You could also send a thank-you message. Even short notes encourage people doing quiet, healing work behind the scenes.
