History

Unification Day marks a significant event in Bulgarian history. It celebrates the merging of the Principality of Bulgaria and the region of Eastern Rumelia.

The international powers did not originally plan this unity. The Berlin Treaty in 1878 split Bulgaria into separate regions. People in these areas, however, desired to reunite as a single nation.

The idea of unification gained momentum over time. In 1885, a group of determined individuals decided to take action. Zahari Stoyanov, a revolutionary and writer, led the efforts. With the support of secret committees, they planned a peaceful uprising in Plovdiv, the capital of Eastern Rumelia.

On the morning of September 6, 1885, they declared the unification. They did this without waiting for approval from the Great Powers. The Bulgarian people were overjoyed. Prince Alexander I supported this bold move, making it official soon after.

This event surprised many, as it happened without conflict. Bulgaria stood firm despite international opposition. The victory in the brief Serbo-Bulgarian War that followed further solidified the unification.

Today, this day is a symbol of national pride and unity. It shows how determination and courage can shape a nation’s destiny.

How to celebrate

Walk Down Memory Lane

Stroll through the historical sites of Plovdiv, where it all began. The city hosts lively reenactments of the events that led to unification. It’s like stepping into a time machine, but with fewer mustaches and more smartphones. Whether you’re a history buff or just love a good story, these performances bring the past to life in a fun and engaging way.

Flag Your Ride!

Deck your car, bike, or even your favorite pair of shoes with Bulgarian flags. Cruise around town like you’re on a national pride parade! It’s a playful way to show off your love for Bulgaria and get a few smiles (or honks) along the way.

Wreath-Laying, the Chill Way

Join a local ceremony where wreaths are laid at monuments dedicated to the heroes of unification. Or, if you prefer a more laid-back approach, create a small wreath at home and place it in your garden. Who says paying tribute can’t be a personal and zen-like experience?

Dine like It’s 1885

Whip up some traditional Bulgarian dishes and invite friends over for a potluck with a historical twist. Each dish can represent a region that was part of the unification. It’s a tasty way to celebrate the diverse flavors of Bulgaria while honoring its unified spirit.

DIY History Lesson

If you have kids or curious friends, organize a mini trivia night about the unification. Prepare some quirky questions about the historical figures and events. It’s a fun way to educate and entertain without the risk of falling asleep over a history book. Whether you’re out and about or celebrating from the comfort of your home, there are countless ways to feel connected to Bulgaria’s vibrant history and unity. Enjoy the day, wave that flag proudly, and maybe learn a fact or two along the way!
