History

U.S. Air Force Academy Day began on April 1, 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 325, which officially established the academy.

This law was the result of years of advocacy by military and civic leaders who saw the need for a dedicated institution to train Air Force officers. The decision marked a significant step in providing the Air Force with its academy, similar to the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The academy initially operated at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, where the first class of cadets was sworn in on July 11, 1955. Construction of the permanent site in Colorado Springs began soon after.

By August 29, 1958, cadets moved to the new campus, which had grown significantly over the years. The academy expanded its curriculum and facilities, and in 1976, it welcomed its first female cadets.

The academy continues to evolve, providing top-notch education and training to future Air Force officers!
