Tick Tock Day, also known as Still Need to Do Day, was created by Thomas and Ruth Roy, the couple behind Wellcat Holidays.
Known for inventing lighthearted and thought-provoking observances, the Roys began adding new “days” to the calendar in the 1980s and 1990s to fill what they saw as gaps in how people celebrate everyday life.
Their holidays, including Tick Tock Day, are listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events, an annual reference book that catalogs official and unofficial holidays around the world.
Every year, people look forward to New Year’s Eve to establish their New Year’s Resolutions, which, of course, rarely, if ever, come to pass. But what of the last precious moments of the year already passed?
Tick Tock Day urges us to make the most of this time to complete those tasks that can be done in that time, and further reminds us just how much can be done in a short amount of time if you truly urge yourself forward.
Though it isn’t an official public holiday, Tick Tock Day has become a symbolic moment of reflection for many. It encourages individuals to pause, review their achievements, and make space for new beginnings.
Over time, the day has grown in popularity on social media and productivity blogs, reminding everyone that even the smallest completed task can make the transition into a new year feel more fulfilling.
Live With No Regrets
One of the most important things to do on Tick Tock Day is to stop worrying about the time that has passed. A lot of us spend so much time worrying about what we haven’t done, instead of focusing on what we can do.
Make a Task List
A good activity to do on this date is to grab yourself a diary or a notebook and make a list of the tasks that you want to get ticked off before the year comes to a close. This will give you a sense of focus, and it will make it a lot easier for you to start doing instead of simply wasting time. From changing the oil in your car to painting a spare room, there are lots of different sorts of tasks that may require your attention before we move into next year. A lot of people also use Tick Tock Day as an opportunity to rekindle any friendships that may have turned sour. Even if you’re not able to repair the damage, you can take comfort from the fact that you tried, and this can help to clear your mind for the year ahead.
