History

Texas SandFest started in 1997 as a small, local event. The idea came from Sharon Schafer and was first organized by the Port Aransas Art Center, which was then called the Art Center for the Islands.

That year, artists and volunteers worked together to hold a sand sculpting contest on the beach. Proceeds helped raise money for the Port Aransas Community Theatre, and the early event had a casual, hometown feel.

Sculptors created designs in the sand while visitors watched, cheered, and donated to support the cause.

As the years passed, more people joined. The event grew bigger, drawing attention beyond the town. In 2006, organizers formed a nonprofit and officially registered Texas SandFest as a 501(c)(3).

This step gave it structure and allowed it to support more local efforts. Soon after, the festival began welcoming artists from different countries.

With that came larger crowds, more activities, and more community programs funded through event profits.

Today, Texas SandFest is one of the biggest beach festivals in the United States. It brings together world-class sculptors, local vendors, and thousands of guests.

The event still keeps its original spirit—art, fun, and giving back—all held on the wide, sandy beaches of Port Aransas.
