History

This day was established through the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 with the purpose of “honoring and supporting the victims and survivors of terrorism” as well as with the intention of promoting and protecting their rights and freedoms. The hope is that this annual observance will raise awareness in UN member countries about the need to act against terrorism, promote international solidarity, prevent the activities of violent extremism and help everyone recognize and uphold and support their human rights and needs.

By 2023, reviews of the efforts of International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism included the need to specifically support the needs and uphold the rights of women and children, as well as those affected by sexual abuse or gender-based violence from individual terrorists or groups of terrorists.

How to celebrate

Host a Victims of Terrorism Remembrance Event

People in communities all over the globe can participate in the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism by gathering groups of people to pay their respects. This might be through a number of different efforts such as candlelight prayer vigils, community gatherings, educational seminars or other types of events. Schools can host events where students create and display artwork or poetry that expresses grief and sorrow, as well as hope for the future, even in light of terrorism in the world.

Access the Victims of Terrorism Support Portal

The United Nations provides a support portal for those who have been impacted by acts of terrorism. The web page offers resources and information related to the needs of victims and survivors. Other information on the page includes information about the activities of the Global Programme for counter-terrorism, including forums, advocacy, policy work, outreach and more.

Speak Out Against Terrorism

To fight terrorism at home, it is important that individuals use their voices to report to the authorities any suspicious activity that might be related to terrorism. In addition, educating children about terrorism is a difficult topic but vitally important for building a new generation that stands up against it.
