National Techies Day was originally developed for the purpose of helping high school students become educated about careers in technology. It was first established in 1998 by techies.com with the support of CNET Networks.
With the awareness that the world of the future will see ever greater integrations of technology into our day-to-day lives, there is the knowledge that with those innovations will come the need for the truly technologically savvy.
The world is in dire need of those men and women, boys and girls, who know their way around this technology-driven world and can help those who are perhaps less knowledgeable find their way.
So what, exactly, is a techie?
A techie is an individual who is deeply interested in technology and seeing it move forward. When a new technical toy comes out, it is a guarantee that it was a techie who designed it, and other techies who will be the first to own it.
In modern days, Information Technology experts are specifically referred to as Techies, and unsurprisingly so as they’re the ones who keep various offices, businesses and individuals moving forward.
The bane and balm of a techie is obsolescence, the unavoidable process by which current technology becomes obsolete as new tech gets developed and integrated into our lives.
But, no matter how long their inventions last, techies certainly deserve to be appreciated for everything that they have done–and for what they are about to do in the future!
Teach Kids About Technology
Parents and teachers can join in on celebrating this day by making sure their kids are well educated in the understanding of how important technology is to the world. Those with a computer lover or gamer might see the potential for them to be a budding techie themselves. Encourage kids in your life to consider a career in computer science or adopt a lifestyle that is built around a technical profession. The more the future relies on technology, the more job security there will be in these types of careers!
Let a Techie Know They are Appreciated
Celebrating National Techies Day starts by honoring and celebrating those people who keep the world moving forward for us. Be sure to send a thank you card or email to the people who keep those printers running, those networks flowing, and, oh yes, the email you just sent is able to get to its destination! Say ‘thank you’ to the IT department in the office or, better yet, throw them a little appreciation party. Get them a cake, take them out to lunch, bake them a batch of cookies and just generally let them know how much it means that they keep the background of everything running so smoothly.
Learn About Tech Jobs and Careers
For some people, when a person starts speaking about technology, their eyes tend to glaze over. Show those tech-savvy friends how much they are appreciated by learning a bit about what they do for a living. So next time a techie says that they do one of these jobs, you’ll know what it is: Software Developer. This is the behind the scenes person who makes sure that the programs on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers will perform the tasks that the humans need them to. It’s one of the most prominent jobs in a tech company and is highly centralized around coding as well as understanding the needs of the consumer. Web Developer. This category includes webmasters, web designers and web architects. All of these jobs involved the construction and maintenance of websites for businesses, governments and individuals. Information Security Analyst. Keeping the people’s information safe from hackers and thieves, these folks use programming skills to prevent security breaches. Product Developer. These folks are the go-betweens with the software and the actual product. They make sure the product meets the news of the customer and work to solve various challenges in the industry.
