History

Team Green Britain Bike Week began in 2010 as a collaboration between Team Green Britain and the UK’s long-standing Bike Week. This partnership was initiated by EDF Energy to encourage more people to cycle regularly and to promote the benefits of cycling as a healthy, practical, and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

The initiative has grown significantly since its inception, with participation from hundreds of thousands of people across the UK.

It has also received support from prominent figures like Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton and organizations involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The week has become a key event in promoting a sustainable and active lifestyle while reducing carbon footprints and fostering community spirit.

How to celebrate

Take a Scenic Bike Ride

Dust off that old bicycle and head out for a scenic ride. Explore local parks, trails, or even city streets you’ve never seen before. Enjoy the fresh air and the wind in your hair. Pack a small picnic to make it an adventure!

Organize a Bike Parade

Gather friends, family, and neighbors for a fun bike parade. Decorate bikes with colorful streamers, balloons, and flags. Set a route through your neighborhood and spread cheer. Award small prizes for the most creative decorations!

Host a Bike Maintenance Workshop

Get those bikes in top shape with a maintenance workshop. Invite a local bike mechanic or an experienced cyclist to teach basic repairs and safety checks. Learn how to fix a flat tire, adjust brakes, and keep your bike running smoothly.

Plan a Community Cycling Event

Join forces with local organizations to plan a community cycling event. Arrange group rides, cycling games, and safety demonstrations. Encourage everyone to participate and enjoy the fun of biking together.

Cycle to Work or School

Challenge yourself and others to ditch the car and cycle to work or school for the week. Not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, but you’ll also get some exercise. Encourage colleagues and classmates to join in for a healthier commute.

Explore Bike-Friendly Cafes

Combine your love for cycling with a love for coffee. Plan a bike tour of local cafes that are bike-friendly. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a tasty treat at each stop, and support local businesses while you’re at it.

Organize a Charity Bike Ride

Use your cycling passion to give back. Organize a charity bike ride to raise funds for a good cause. Invite participants to join and gather donations. It’s a great way to make a difference while staying active.

Teach Kids to Ride

Share the joy of cycling by teaching kids how to ride. Host a beginners’ session in a safe, open space. Bring small bikes, helmets, and lots of patience. Watching them pedal for the first time is truly rewarding!
