History

The Surva Mummers Festival in Pernik, Bulgaria, is one of the most important masquerade events in the country. It began on January 16, 1966, initiated by the local community in Pernik to preserve and showcase traditional Bulgarian rituals.

The festival celebrates an ancient custom where men, dressed as mythical creatures, perform rituals to chase away evil spirits and bring good fortune. These customs, rooted in Thracian traditions, were once held in honor of the god Dionysus.

Over time, the festival grew, gaining international recognition. In 1985, it was officially recognized as an international event, and by 1995, Pernik joined the European Federation of Carnival Cities. The event is now the largest masquerade festival in the Balkans, attracting participants from all over the world.

In 2015, UNESCO added the festival to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition highlights the importance of the event in preserving and promoting Bulgaria’s folklore and cultural heritage. The festival remains a vibrant celebration of traditional costumes, music, and dances.

The festival features elaborate parades with performers wearing unique masks and costumes made from fur, feathers, and other materials.

These masks often depict animals or mythical beings, symbolizing the battle between good and evil. Participants dance to the sound of heavy copper bells, believed to enhance the protective powers of their costumes.

The Surva Festival continues to be a significant cultural event in Bulgaria, blending ancient traditions with modern festivities. It draws thousands of visitors each year who come to witness this lively and colorful spectacle.

Participate in a Ritual

Some groups may invite spectators to participate in a light version of the traditional rituals. This can include a gentle tap on the back with a decorated branch to bring good fortune. If you’re feeling brave, join in the fun and be part of the tradition.
