History

Statehood Day in Croatia celebrates the country’s significant political transformation. It began on May 30, 1990, when the newly elected Croatian Parliament held its first session. This day marked the beginning of Croatia’s shift from communist rule to democracy. The government, led by President Franjo Tuđman, played a crucial role in this historic moment.

Originally, the day honored the first multi-party elections and the formation of the new parliament, which marked the start of Croatia’s journey to independence. In later years, the holiday moved to June 25 but was brought back to May 30 in 2020 after a government decision. This was to more accurately honor the democratic breakthrough.

This holiday reflects the Croatian people’s aspirations for freedom and remains a symbol of national pride and unity!
