The celebration started when a hermit named Pelagius saw a star leading him to the burial site. The event marked the beginning of Santiago de Compostela as a significant pilgrimage destination. St. James the Great’s dedication to spreading Christianity and his martyrdom inspired the celebrations. His followers transported his remains from Jerusalem to Spain, where they believed he had preached.
