Silence the Shame Day
Many people who struggle with mental health issues not only have the burden to face their own problems, but often they also feel embarrassed or they believe they need to hide it – which could mean they avoid getting help. Show support while gaining some focus and perspective during this event...
Position your brand as a mental health ally by sponsoring awareness events, sharing employee wellness stories, or donating to mental health nonprofits during May's Silence the Shame Day.
- Share employee mental health journeys to humanize your brand and reduce workplace stigma
- Partner with mental health nonprofits for co-branded awareness campaigns and fundraising
- Host virtual or in-person wellness seminars and community conversations featuring mental health experts
- Create educational content on mind-heart-body wellness that positions your company as a trusted resource
This event was founded in 2017 by the Hip Hop Professional Foundation. It was intentionally set during the activism created by Mental Health Awareness Month in May, building more opportunities for support and care.
The purpose of Silence the Shame Day is to increase awareness the three main aspects that impact our mental health as humans:
These elements help to inform and define human well-being and striking up conversations about them is a vital part of what Silence the Shame Day is all about.
Join in with the cause, start a conversation, share with a friend and get involved with this day that is meant to reduce the stigma, promoting honesty and authenticity for those who need help with mental health.
Attend Silence the Shame Events
Take this opportunity to attend an important event, and invite someone else to go along too! This might include seminars on mental wellness, community conversations, self-care socials and much more. Check out the Silence the Shame Day website for more access to events and activities that are organized each year in honor of this day.
Tell Your Story
Those who have experience with mental health challenges can share their own personal stories with others. This could happen through personal relationships, online platforms such as blogs, or social media accounts. Encourage someone else who is struggling and offer them a beacon of hope today and all throughout the year.
Break the Stereotypes
One difficult challenge of struggling with mental health issues, including depression, breakdowns, burnout and more, is the social pressure that can come from feeling ashamed about these things. Spend some time on this day considering some of your own biases toward mental health issues and make a commitment to learning more and becoming more accepting. In addition, this is a good time to think ahead and prepare yourself for what you might say in defense of mental health and wellness when you come across another person with a bias or who acts in a way that is shaming toward those with such challenges.
Get Involved with Mental Wellness
From making a donation to a favorite charity that supports mental health to becoming an advocate, from sharing online to making a career change and becoming a counselor, there are many ways – big and small – to show support and care for Silence the Shame Day! People are encouraged to host awareness events and online fundraisers, become corporate sponsors and so much more in support of this event.
