History

Samaritans Awareness Day began as an initiative to highlight the importance of emotional support and active listening for those in distress.

It was founded by British vicar Chad Varah in 1953. Varah, driven by a desire to help people contemplating suicide, started a helpline for individuals needing someone to talk to. This helpline marked the birth of the Samaritans, an organization dedicated to providing 24/7 confidential support.

Chad Varah’s vision for a “999 for the suicidal” took root when he answered the first call on November 2, 1953. Initially, Varah managed the calls himself, but the need for more support became evident quickly.

By February 1954, volunteers were trained to take calls, turning the Samaritans into a robust support network. The name “Samaritans” came from a newspaper article that referred to the service as a “Telephone Good Samaritan,” which helped spread awareness.

Samaritans Awareness Day is now observed annually to remind people of the continuous availability of help and to encourage reaching out for support. This day underscores the value of listening without judgment and promotes the wide range of services provided by the Samaritans.

The organization has grown significantly, with thousands of volunteers across numerous branches, all committed to mental health support and suicide prevention.

How to celebrate

Host a Listening Party

Why not throw a quirky listening party? Gather friends, serve snacks, and take turns sharing stories. Each guest gets a chance to speak while others practice their best active listening skills. It’s fun and meaningful. Add a twist by using prompts to spark conversations.

Create a Positivity Wall

Transform a blank wall into a canvas of positivity. Encourage everyone to write uplifting messages, inspiring quotes, or supportive thoughts on colorful sticky notes. Watching the wall fill up with positivity can be quite uplifting for everyone involved.

Volunteer as a Samaritan

Volunteering is a great way to celebrate. Sign up for a shift with the Samaritans. Spend time listening to others and offering support. It’s an incredible experience that makes a real difference in someone’s life. Plus, you might make some new friends along the way.

Social Media Shoutout

Give Samaritans a shoutout on your social media. Share posts, stories, and videos highlighting the importance of mental health support. Use hashtags and engage with followers to spread the word. It’s a simple yet powerful way to raise awareness.

Organize a Fundraiser

Plan a fun fundraiser. Whether it’s a bake sale, charity run, or an online auction, raising money for Samaritans can be both fun and impactful. Get creative with your ideas and involve as many people as possible to maximize your efforts.

Share a Meal

Invite someone who might be lonely for a meal. Cook together or share a favorite dish. Food and conversation can be a comforting mix, providing a relaxed environment for someone to open up and talk about their feelings.
