History

Saci Day started in Brazil as a fun way to celebrate local folklore. It was created by a cultural organization called Amigos do Saci. They wanted to promote Brazilian legends, especially the story of Saci-Pererê.

The idea came about in the early 2000s. They wanted to create an alternative to Halloween, which was growing popular in Brazil at the time.

The first official celebration of Saci Day happened in 2004 in São Paulo, after the state passed a law making it an official holiday. From there, other cities in Brazil also joined in. The holiday encourages people to learn more about Saci and other local myths.

It also helps preserve Brazilian culture by reminding everyone of the country’s rich storytelling traditions.

The decision to place Saci Day on the same date as Halloween was no accident. The creators wanted Brazilians to focus on their own cultural heroes instead of adopting foreign ones. By celebrating Saci, Brazilians get to enjoy their own magical stories. This unique character, known for causing mischief, now has a day just for him.

Through Saci Day, people are reminded that their local legends are just as fun and exciting as any others.

How to celebrate

Get Crafty with Saci Art

Break out the art supplies and craft your own Saci creations. Use clay, paper, or even recycled materials to sculpt little one-legged figures. Display them proudly around the house, and maybe one might sneakily disappear!

Enjoy Saci-Inspired Treats
