The National Rural Transit Assistance Program (National RTAP) established Rural Transit Day in 2019. This special day was created to highlight the work of transit agencies in recognizing passengers and staff, and to bring attention to the unique challenges and opportunities that rural transit presents. It’s a day that underscores the importance of rural transit in connecting communities, fostering economic development, and enhancing quality of life.
The roots of rural transit trace back to 1979 when the Federal Transit Administration began providing funds to establish and maintain transit systems in communities with populations under 50,000. This initiative was a recognition of the essential role that transit plays in rural communities, providing vital links to healthcare, employment, education, and social activities.
Recognizing the need for specialized skills and knowledge in this sector, Congress authorized the creation of National RTAP in 1986. Since then, National RTAP has been instrumental in developing training materials, providing technical assistance, conducting research, and offering peer assistance for rural and tribal transit providers. It’s a testament to the ongoing commitment to improving and sustaining rural transit systems across the country.
