Public Service Recognition Week began in 1985 when it was started by the Public Employees Roundtable, which was a coalition of federal, state, and local government employee organizations. This week-long event occurs during the first full week of May each year. The purpose is to honor the hard work and dedication of public servants across the nation.
The event is organized by the Partnership for Public Service, a non-profit, non-partisan group. Each year, the event is agreed upon by US Congress and proclaimed by the US President.
Over the years, Public Service Recognition Week has grown to include numerous activities and events. Government agencies and communities organize award ceremonies, educational sessions, and public outreach efforts. These activities help raise awareness about the importance of public service and encourage future generations to consider careers in this field.
