Peace Corps Week commemorates the establishment of the Peace Corps, founded by President John F. Kennedy back in 1961. This holiday celebrates all the volunteers that have placed themselves abroad, transforming communities through diplomacy and acts of service.
Many volunteers go out on two to three years, and with their qualifications and skills, help out local communities in countries that are in need, ranging from education, economic development, environment, agriculture, and health. On average, 230,000 volunteers head out to countries all over the world to join the Peace Corps and because of the immense amount of people dedicated to service, this holiday is all about giving back.
Therefore, Peace Corps Week focuses on thanking those who have volunteered around the world and listening to their stories. Many volunteers find valuable experiences from their travels and learn about different perspectives from people all over the world.
The main website hosts multiple events all over the country for their volunteers, including contests, video seminars, festivals, story slams, blog posts, and much more. Peace Corps Week aims to teach people about the differences volunteers make when they join the Peace Corps. All because two years can make a huge difference, where friends are made, homes are created, and transformations come to pass.
