History

Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day started in 2006. The American Society of Safety Engineers, now called the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), created the day.

They wanted to honor people who work to keep others safe while on the job.

These professionals look for hazards, offer advice, and put rules in place that prevent harm. The group chose the first Wednesday of May, which fits inside North American Occupational Safety and Health Week. That timing helps remind the public how much these workers do behind the scenes.

In 2007, the United States Senate gave the day formal recognition. That gave the event more weight and helped spread the message further.

Since then, workplaces across many fields have used the day to say thank you to safety teams. The people in these roles do more than check boxes.

They help prevent accidents, illness, and even death. They teach others how to use tools safely, what to do during fires, and how to stay healthy on the job.

This day gives their work the attention it deserves. While their names may not always be known, their impact is felt every day in safer offices, factories, shops, and job sites across the country.

How to celebrate

Host a Safety-Themed Party

Organize a workplace gathering with safety-themed decorations and activities. Include games that highlight safety practices, like a scavenger hunt for safety equipment. Recognize outstanding safety contributions with awards or certificates. This not only celebrates the day but also reinforces the importance of safety in a fun way.

Create a Safety Poster Contest

Encourage employees to design posters that promote safety awareness. Display the winning designs in common areas to inspire ongoing commitment to safety. This activity fosters creativity and reinforces safety messages throughout the workplace.

Organize a Charity Walk or Run

Plan a charity event focused on promoting occupational safety and health. Participants can raise funds for a related cause, combining physical activity with community support. This event highlights the significance of safety professionals while contributing to a worthy cause.

Conduct Safety Workshops

Arrange interactive workshops on topics like first aid, ergonomics, or emergency preparedness. These sessions provide valuable knowledge and demonstrate the organization’s commitment to employee well-being. Engaging employees in hands-on learning can enhance their understanding of safety practices.

Launch a Safety Recognition Program

Implement a program that acknowledges employees who consistently adhere to safety protocols. Regular recognition can motivate others to prioritize safety in their daily tasks. Celebrating these efforts reinforces a culture of safety and appreciation within the organization.
