History

National Spice Blend Day started in 2021. Angel Gregorio, the founder of The Spice Suite in Washington, D.C., launched it to celebrate her business’s sixth year. She wanted the day to spotlight the creativity behind mixing spices.

For her, spice blends weren’t just about taste—they carried culture, stories, and bold imagination. Her shop already encouraged people to explore flavor through handcrafted mixes, so she took the idea further.

She created the holiday to inspire others to think outside the usual salt-and-pepper routine. Many home cooks and food lovers embraced the idea. The day quickly caught attention for its message: flavor belongs to everyone. You don’t need fancy tools or special training. Just curiosity, a few jars, and a willingness to try.

National Spice Blend Day honors the power of everyday ingredients. It reminds us that blending spices is an art form anyone can enjoy.

Through this celebration, Gregorio also uplifted small spice makers and encouraged people to support local businesses. Since then, every year brings more people together around food, flavor, and fun experimentation in the kitchen.

How to celebrate

Create Your Own Spice Blends

Experimenting with custom spice mixes can elevate your culinary skills. Combine spices like cumin, coriander, and paprika to craft a unique blend that suits your taste. This activity not only enhances your dishes but also deepens your understanding of flavor combinations.

Host a Spice-Themed Potluck

Invite friends and family to a potluck where each person brings a dish featuring a distinctive spice blend. This gathering allows everyone to experience various cuisines and discover new favorite flavors. Sharing recipes can further enrich the culinary adventure.

Attend a Spice Workshop

Participating in a spice blending workshop can provide hands-on experience and knowledge about different spices. Many culinary schools and specialty shops offer classes that teach the art of mixing spices. These workshops can inspire you to incorporate new flavors into your cooking.

Cook a New Recipe

Challenge yourself to prepare a dish from a cuisine you’re unfamiliar with, using its traditional spice blend. For instance, try making Moroccan tagine with ras el hanout or Indian curry with garam masala. This practice broadens your palate and cooking repertoire.

Grow Your Own Herbs

Starting a small herb garden at home ensures a fresh supply of ingredients for your spice blends. Herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme are easy to cultivate and can be dried for later use. Gardening adds a personal touch to your culinary creations.
