History

National Speak Up for Victims of Sexual Abuse Day began in 2021. Jack Nunnery, a survivor of childhood abuse, created this day. She wanted others to feel safe speaking out.

Her effort, called “Speak Up,” gives people strength to share painful truths and start healing.

The day focuses on survivors who often carry silent wounds. Many feel alone, afraid, or ignored. This event tells them they are not invisible.

It brings attention to their stories and shows support for their courage. Speaking up is not easy, but it can open the door to recovery.

People observe the day by wearing teal and sharing messages of care. Some join events that create safe spaces for discussion. Others post online to raise awareness. Every voice helps break the silence that often surrounds sexual abuse.

This day encourages listening with compassion. It reminds us that survivors deserve to be heard and believed.

Talking about abuse helps end the shame and fear tied to it. More people speaking leads to stronger support systems and safer communities.

The message is clear: survivors matter. They should never have to carry their pain alone. National Speak Up Day pushes us to stand beside them and listen without judgment.
