History

National Smarties Day began on October 2, 2022, marking the birthday of Edward Dee, the creator of Smarties candies.

The Smarties Candy Company, in partnership with the National Day Calendar, established this day to honor both the beloved candy and its founder’s commitment to lifelong learning.

Edward Dee, originally from England, started making Smarties in 1949 after moving to the United States. His goal was to share his family’s candy-making tradition with a new audience.

Decades later, his granddaughters, now leading the company, introduced National Smarties Day to celebrate the candy’s enduring popularity and the company’s dedication to education.

How to celebrate

Share the Sweetness

Hand out small rolls of Smarties to friends, coworkers, or classmates. Brighten their day with a simple treat. Tuck a cheerful note alongside for an extra smile. Even a few pieces can spark joy and good conversation.

Get Creative in the Kitchen

Bake cupcakes or cookies and press Smarties on top before they cool. The colors pop and add fun to every bite. For a quick snack, stir them into trail mix or sprinkle over ice cream.

Host a Candy Game Night

Use Smarties as game tokens for trivia or board games. Keep a bowl nearby for snacking between rounds. Set lighthearted rules and reward winners with extra rolls or playful prizes.

Make Art with Color

Glue Smarties onto cardboard or paper to craft simple mosaics. Kids and adults can join the fun. Display the finished designs on a fridge or window sill for a burst of color.

Learn and Give Back

Read about Edward Dee and the company’s focus on education. Share what you learn with someone new. Support a local school with a small donation or supplies in honor of the day.
