The background of National Rebuilding Day is directly tied to a grassroots movement of people helping other people with their home improvement projects.
Starting in Texas in the 1970s, the Rebuilding Together organization has grown and spread across the United States, making a difference by helping neighbors who need it.
National Rebuilding Day was first celebrated in 1989 as part of the Rebuilding Together initiative, growing to include a wide range of non-profit organizations, community efforts, and business sponsors such as Lowe’s.
Since its humble beginnings, this event has grown in size and scope to reach people in more than 38 US states as well as the District of Columbia.
Each year, during National Rebuilding Day, hundreds of homes across the nation are chosen through an application process to be recipients of improvements and repairs to help families live in a safer, healthier, and more accessible manner.
Thousands of volunteers are coordinated to help their neighbors and make their local communities – and the world – a better place!
Volunteer for National Rebuilding Day
One of the best ways to participate in National Rebuilding Day is to reach out to one of the dozens of different affiliates throughout the nation (check the organization’s website) and sign up to volunteer. From organizing community cleanups to addressing safety concerns with better neighborhood lighting, from removing mold and other triggers to installing accessibility help, each neighborhood and community has a myriad of needs that can be met through the assistance of volunteers through Rebuilding Together.
Help a Neighbor for Rebuilding Day
The foundation that National Rebuilding Day was built upon is the idea of helping each other out and supporting the community. There are number of different ways this can be accomplished on a local level, including checking on an elderly neighbor, helping by mowing the neighbor’s grass, taking someone a meal when they are sick or many other types of activities that foster community!
Sponsor National Rebuilding Day
Companies and non-profit organizations are invited to get involved with National Rebuilding Day by sponsoring some of the events that take place locally through financial donations, volunteer organization, marketing and more. And if there is a group that finds they don’t have a local chapter of Rebuilding Together, then what about trying to gather the community and start a new chapter in honor of National Rebuilding Day?
