History

National Productive Business Civility Day began in 2020. Professor Vernet A. Joseph founded it to inspire better workplace habits.

He believed that people could work hard and treat each other well at the same time. The idea came from seeing how stress and poor communication could harm both morale and results. He wanted to fix that by blending strong work ethics with kindness.

This day encourages teams to stay focused and respectful, no matter how busy they get. It reminds leaders and staff that productivity should not come at the cost of decency.

Respectful actions—like listening, showing patience, and sharing credit—can improve teamwork and outcomes. Simple changes in behavior often lead to big improvements in mood and motivation.

Since its start, the day has gained attention in offices, schools, and business groups. Many now use it to pause and think about how they work together.

Some hold events or training sessions to support the message. Others just take time to appreciate polite, efficient behavior.

The goal remains the same—bring people together in workplaces that value effort and good manners equally.

That balance can build stronger teams and happier, more effective workplaces. It’s not just about doing more; it’s about doing better, together.

How to celebrate

Start with Gratitude

Kick off the day by expressing appreciation to colleagues. A simple thank-you note or a kind word can boost morale and set a positive tone for the day.

Organize a Civility Workshop

Host a short workshop focusing on respectful communication and collaboration. Discuss scenarios and strategies that promote a positive workplace culture.

Create a Shared Goals Board

Set up a board where team members can post their daily or weekly goals. This fosters transparency and encourages mutual support among colleagues.

Schedule Mindful Breaks

Encourage employees to take short, regular breaks to recharge. This practice can enhance focus and reduce stress, leading to better productivity.

Highlight Acts of Kindness

Recognize and share stories of team members who go above and beyond to help others. Celebrating these actions reinforces a culture of civility and cooperation.
