History

National Port Wine Day was created in 2014 by the Douro and Port Wine Institute in Portugal.

The group launched the day to share Port’s story with a wider audience and to mark an important moment in wine history.

Back in 1756, the Douro Valley became the first official wine region in the world. That move helped protect the style, name, and quality of Port wine.

The Marquis of Pombal led the effort, setting rules that shaped how the Port was made and sold.

The institute picked this date to connect the present with the past. They wanted more people to taste and learn about Port, not just collectors or experts.

Over time, the day has gained attention beyond Portugal. Wine shops, bars, and casual drinkers have joined the fun. It’s now a way to explore flavors, support producers, and learn something new.

Unlike other wine events, this day stays close to its roots. It honors not just the drink but also the region and people behind it. Even those new to wine can take part without pressure.

National Port Wine Day keeps things open, friendly, and full of flavor. That simple focus has helped it grow year after year.

How to celebrate

Try a Tasting at Home

Set out a few Port styles—white, ruby, and tawny. Pour small amounts, then compare the flavors. Sip slowly, notice textures. Use plain crackers or mild cheese to clear your palate between pours. Keep it casual and fun, not formal.

Make a Simple Cocktail

Port works well in easy mixed drinks. Stir it with tonic water and orange peel for a refreshing change. Or pour it over ice with lemon. These drinks stay light but still feel flavorful. You don’t need special tools—just a glass and a spoon.

Pair with Food

Match different Ports with small bites. Tawny pairs well with nuts or dried fruit. Ruby complements chocolate or sharp cheese. White works with salty snacks. Don’t overthink it—experiment and enjoy the mix. Trust your taste buds.

Visit a Local Wine Shop

Many shops carry several kinds of Port. Ask for help picking one that suits your taste. Some stores even offer samples. Chatting with staff makes the experience more personal. You might discover something new and affordable.

Post a Photo or Toast

Share your glass on social media or raise a toast with friends. Snap a photo of your favorite pour. Keep it simple and fun. Spread the joy and get others curious about this flavorful tradition.
