History

National Playground Safety Week began in 1997 and was initiated by the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS).

The goal was to raise awareness about playground safety and reduce the risk of injuries on playgrounds. Initially, it started as a single day of focus, but due to its success, it expanded into a full week dedicated to this important cause.

The event was created to encourage safer playground environments by emphasizing the importance of proper supervision, appropriate playground designs, safe surfacing, and regular equipment maintenance.

By promoting these elements, the NPPS aimed to ensure that playgrounds were safe for children to play in and to reduce the number of playground-related accidents.

Since its inception, National Playground Safety Week has grown significantly, with more states and communities participating each year.

State governors are encouraged to proclaim the week officially, and many activities are organized to promote playground safety, including safety checks, educational events, and community engagement initiatives.

How to celebrate

Create Safety Checklists

Design a fun and colorful safety checklist with kids. Let them become mini-safety inspectors! They can check slides, swings, and other equipment for any issues. This not only ensures safety but also teaches children responsibility. They’ll love the role of a playground detective!

Host a Safety Day

Organize a community safety day at the local park. Invite families to attend safety workshops and interactive games that focus on playground safety rules. Have experts demonstrate proper playground use and maintenance tips. This will make learning about safety engaging and memorable for everyone.

Playground Art Contest

Encourage kids to draw their dream safe playground. Host an art contest where children can showcase their creativity while thinking about safety. Display their artwork around the park. This activity sparks imagination and highlights the importance of safe play spaces.

Safety Scavenger Hunt

Plan a scavenger hunt with a safety twist. Hide clues around the playground that lead to safety tips or pieces of safety equipment. Kids will have a blast searching for clues while learning about staying safe. Reward them with small prizes or certificates.

Thank a Playground Hero

Recognize the unsung heroes who keep playgrounds safe. Create thank-you cards or small tokens of appreciation for maintenance workers, volunteers, or park officials. Showing gratitude encourages continued dedication to maintaining safe play areas.
