History

National Parents Day Off is a day made just for parents to take a real break. It gives moms, dads, and caregivers a moment to step back from their busy routines and just breathe.

So many parents give their time, energy, and care every day without asking for much in return. This day puts the spotlight on their everyday efforts and reminds everyone that rest matters, too. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being human.

The idea came from Epic, a digital reading platform for kids. In 2021, they launched National Parents Day Off to recognize the hard work and constant care that parents give.

Epic wanted to create a time where families, schools, and communities could say, “Thank you,” in a real way.

The first celebration took place in mid-September of that year. Since then, it’s been growing in support, encouraging more people to pause and show appreciation.

While small, the gesture behind this day carries a big message—parents deserve care, too.

How to celebrate

Organize a Family Picnic

Gather your loved ones for a delightful picnic in a local park or your backyard. Pack everyone’s favorite foods, play outdoor games, and enjoy quality time together. This simple activity strengthens family bonds and creates cherished memories.

Plan a Surprise Date Night

Arrange a surprise evening for parents to unwind and reconnect. Secure a babysitter, make reservations at their favorite restaurant, or set up a cozy movie night at home. This thoughtful gesture allows parents to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Create a Memory Scrapbook

Compile a scrapbook filled with photographs, mementos, and handwritten notes from each family member. This personalized gift serves as a beautiful keepsake, celebrating the journey of parenthood and the special moments shared.

Volunteer as a Family

Give back to the community by volunteering together. Choose a local charity or organize a neighborhood clean-up. Engaging in such activities instills values of kindness and compassion in children while creating lasting family memories.

Host a Community Potluck

Bring your community together by organizing a potluck event. Encourage families to bring their favorite dishes and share stories about their parenting experiences. This fosters a sense of unity and allows parents to connect and support one another.
