History

Courtney Hinshaw, a former teacher and book lover, created National Open The Magic Day to honor the magic of reading aloud. She launched the day in 2021 through her platform, Ramona Recommends.

Her goal was to help more children feel confident with books, especially those who find reading hard. As a child, Courtney faced struggles with dyslexia and auditory processing disorder.

Reading didn’t come easily, but picture books gave her joy and comfort.

That joy stuck with her. As an adult, she wanted others to feel it too. So, she built a space where reading aloud could be exciting, not scary. The idea behind the day is simple—open a book and let the story speak. It’s not just for strong readers. It’s for everyone, especially those who need encouragement and support.

Each year, families, teachers, and librarians use this day to lift up voices, both big and small. It turns regular reading into something special.

Whether in a classroom, on the couch, or in a library corner, National Open The Magic Day reminds people how powerful a picture book can be.

How to celebrate

Host a Read-Aloud Session

Gather friends, family, or students and read picture books together. Sharing stories aloud enhances comprehension and fosters a love for reading.

Create a Themed Storytime

Select books with common themes, such as kindness or adventure, and discuss the stories’ messages. This approach encourages deeper engagement with the material.

Dress as Favorite Characters

Encourage children to dress up as characters from their beloved picture books. This activity brings stories to life and makes reading more interactive.

Organize a Book Swap

Invite participants to exchange picture books with one another. This introduces readers to new stories and promotes a sense of community.

Support Struggling Readers

Dedicate time to read with children who find reading challenging. Your support can boost their confidence and enjoyment of books.

Visit a Local Bookstore

Attend events or storytime sessions at nearby bookstores. Many host special activities to celebrate the joy of reading.

Craft Personalized Bookmarks

Engage children in creating their own bookmarks. This simple craft adds a personal touch to their reading experience and encourages creativity.
