History

National Online Bank Day started in 2015. Ally Bank, a digital-only financial institution in the United States, introduced it. The bank created the day to mark a major milestone—reaching one million customers.

But the celebration wasn’t just about numbers. It also aimed to highlight how online banking had changed the way people handle money.

Before this shift, many had to visit physical branches to complete even simple tasks. Ally wanted to show that managing finances could be fast, easy, and done from anywhere.

The company picked the second Monday in October, which is also Columbus Day in the U.S., to grab attention. On that holiday, many banks close. Online banking, however, keeps going without pause. That contrast helped deliver a strong message.

The day now encourages users to explore helpful digital tools offered by their banks. It’s a time to learn how to budget better, set up savings goals, or review account security. Since its launch, the idea has grown beyond just one company.

Now, many people use the day to rethink how they manage their money. National Online Bank Day celebrates this freedom, reminding us that control over our finances can fit right in our pocket.

How to celebrate

Explore Your Bank’s Digital Features

Take time to discover the online tools your bank provides. Many institutions offer features like spending trackers, budgeting aids, and automatic savings plans. Utilizing these can enhance your financial management and help you set achievable goals.

Review and Update Security Settings

Ensure your online banking is secure by updating your passwords and enabling two-factor authentication. Regularly reviewing your security settings can protect your accounts from unauthorized access and provide peace of mind.

Educate a Friend or Family Member

Share your knowledge of online banking with someone who may be less familiar. Guiding them through setting up an account or demonstrating how to navigate digital banking tools can be a valuable and empowering experience.

Set Up Financial Alerts

Configure alerts for account activities such as low balances, large transactions, or upcoming bill payments. These notifications can help you stay informed about your finances and avoid potential issues.

Reflect on Your Financial Goals

Use this day to assess your financial objectives. Whether it’s saving for a vacation, reducing debt, or planning for retirement, online banking tools can assist in tracking your progress and keeping you motivated.
