History

Of course, the history of movies can be traced back more than a century, first with silent films, then with “talkies.” It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that people began to be able to watch movies at home, first on television networks and then with video cassettes.

But the first celebration of this National Movie Night took place much more recently, in 2022. The event was established through the efforts of journalist and movie-lover Jennifer Borget, who runs a blog and writes movie reviews, along with her publication of a movie night journal and guide.

The purpose of the event was simply to encourage people to enjoy a night of stories and entertainment with family and friends.

How to celebrate

Grab the Best Movie Night Snacks

Everyone knows that a movie night without snacks is just… well, it shouldn’t even exist! In preparation for movie night, head over to the supermarket to pick up some favorite snacks of the family members or friends who will join in. From classic gummy bears to freshly-popped popcorn with butter, from homemade brownies to spicy hot corn chips, National Movie Night is so much better with something tasty to munch on!

Enjoy a Movie Night

Grab the family, invite a friend over or just indulge in some alone time – just you and your movies! However you like to enjoy movies, and with whomever you like to enjoy them, National Movie Night is the time to schedule some fiction, fantasy or adventurous film fun. Those who are particularly fond of movies might want to call in for a mental health day and take the whole day to binge watch some of their favorite amazing stories.

Work on a Movie Night Journal

Want to keep things organized and make sure that every movie is given its proper due? Or, even better, want to make a keepsake with the kids of all of the best movies the family has seen together? National Movie Night is just the time to work on a scrapbook or journal that encompasses everyone’s favorite movie adventures. Provide dates and movie titles as well as impressions, thoughts, or even drawings of the feelings or experiences evoked from each film. It’s a fun way to keep a record of the time a family or friend group has spent together at the movies.

FAQ
How can watching movies together strengthen relationships?
Watching movies together gives families and friends a shared experience to talk about, joke about, and remember later, which can deepen feelings of closeness and belonging. Research from Penn State has found that co-viewing media with positive themes can promote cooperation and empathy, while the conversations that follow a film help people understand each other’s perspectives and values.
What are some healthy guidelines for kids’ screen time around movie nights?
Pediatric experts suggest focusing less on a single movie night and more on overall daily habits. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend limiting total recreational screen time for young children, keeping screens out of bedrooms, and avoiding screens 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. A planned family movie that adults watch with children and discuss together is generally viewed more positively than unsupervised, frequent solo viewing.
How can parents choose age-appropriate movies for children and teens?
Experts advise looking at both age ratings and content details, then matching them to a child’s temperament and maturity. Professional groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that parents preview or research films, watch with their children when possible, and use tools like content descriptions and parental guides to anticipate violence, language, or frightening scenes. Talking before and after the movie helps children process what they see and reduces potential harm.
Do movies have proven psychological effects on children?
Studies show that movies can influence children in both helpful and harmful ways. Research summarized on PubMed has found that intense or violent content can lead to fear, anxiety, or nightmares in some children, especially younger ones. Other work published through the Greater Good Science Center reports that thoughtfully chosen films can inspire moral reflection, empathy, and a sense of meaning when adults help children discuss the stories and characters.
Can films really change people’s attitudes or behavior?
Evidence from social science research indicates that films can shift attitudes by shaping how viewers think about groups, issues, and social norms. A review of studies on young people published in an NIH-supported journal found that films can affect beliefs, stereotypes, and prosocial attitudes, sometimes encouraging greater understanding of others or awareness of social problems. The impact depends heavily on the themes of the movie and how critically viewers engage with it.
Is movie violence always harmful, or does context matter?
Context appears to matter a great deal. Health organizations such as Brown University Health report that repeated exposure to violent media can be more concerning for children who already struggle with emotional or behavioral issues, and for those who watch without adult guidance. When parents co-view and talk about what is on screen, they can help children distinguish fantasy from reality, condemn harmful behavior, and focus on problem-solving or positive role models instead.
How has the way people watch movies at home changed over time?
For much of the 20th century, moviegoing was centered on theaters, but television, videotapes, DVDs, and now streaming gradually shifted most viewing into the home. Historical overviews from the National Science and Media Museum note that TV and later home video led to declines in cinema attendance in many countries, while large screens and subscription services made it easier to enjoy film-quality stories from the couch. Today, people commonly mix trips to the theater with home viewing on TVs, laptops, and phones.
